Sony A7s First Impressions by Luminous Landscapes

Image
Sony A7s with Zeiss 24-70mm FE ZA Luminous Landscapes gives us their first impressions with the new low-light king, the Sony A7s . Read their A7s first impression here . They provide samples between the Sony A7s and the A7r to test the A7s' low light capability. Video capability is also discussed. Here are some interesting quotes that we found. Sony is producing more new and interesting cameras, in more categories, and with more new technology than the two market leaders combined. a 12MP file from the A7s can be printed at a size of 16 X 24" when upressed to 360ppi. There is something to the look of A7s files that reminds me of medium format, At ISO 51,200 the A7s is quite usable with some moderate noise reduction My only complaint is that the interface team at Sony forgot to add this feature (Electronic Shutter) to the twelve position Function menu. Why not just keep Electronic Shutter as the default?

Another Sony A7s High ISO Test

Sony A7s High ISO Test by ArtBenny ArtBenny tests the Sony A7s' high iso capability by shooting in a pitch black room. The Zeiss 55mm f/1.8 Sonnar FE lens was used for the test. He states that the A7s was still able to autofocus in such low light. The Sony A7s will be available on July 8th and is priced at $2500. Sony A7s with a Zeiss 24-70mm OSS Lens

NEX-5 Leica 50mm Summilux and High ISO

Image
I was lucky enough to catch a few drinks with another photo enthusiast who happen to have a Leica M8 and a chrome 50mm Summilux-M ASPH. I had my NEX-5 with a Voigtlander 35mm Ultron since I needed the speed whilst at the drinking hole. He was generous enough to slap the Summilux-M onto my Leica-Nex lens adapter and allowed me to use it. All the shots here were taken with the 50mm lens wide open at f/1.4, thus Summilux. The NEX-5 was set to Aperture Priority and ISO 3200 and with the dim lighting conditions at the bar forced the Shutter speed at 1/20th of a second. I would have preferred a shutter speed of 1/75 or higher (50mm x 1.5 crop factor) to keep camera movement at a minimum. The 50mm Summilux-M ASPH is a brick of a lens and I think the weight help stabilize the camera or was it the fear of dropping someone else's lens? The focusing was very well damped, a big difference from my Voigtlander. This made focusing a bit easier with the Leica. The shots were taken in RAW

NEX-7 at ISO 3200 on a Hexakopter

Jeff S. sent us an email to show the latest Sony NEX-7 video by Gravity Shots. Gravity Shots placed the NEX-7 on a Cinestar Hexakopter and went night flying. The camera was set to ISO 3200, and shutter speed at 1/25, to shoot 1080 and 24 frames per second. The 18-55mm OSS lens was set at max aperture. The footage and the house looks great. The continuous autofocus and image stabilization makes for a smooth looking ride. Here was Gravity Shots first footage of the NEX-7 on a Hexacopter . Find out more at facebook.com/quadrocopter . Thanks Jeff!

NEX-5N Low Light Footage and Touchscreen Demo Here's a couple of videos from jpac83 showing NEX-5N footage at 1080p and 24 frames per second. The video above shows footage at ISOs from 100 to 3200 to demonstrate the NEX-5N's low light capability. The video below was shot at 24 frames per second for that cinematic feel. The NEX-5N is the first NEX camera that allows for 24 fps video. NEX-5N with ECM-SST1 Microphone Thanks jpac83 !

NEX-5 High ISO Black and White with CV 35 Ultron

Image
We wanted to test out what the NEX-5 can do with a fast lens and low light so we got a chance to play with a Cosina Voigtlander 35mm f/1.7 Ultron. The CV 35 Ultron is a Leica screw mount with a Leica M adapter, a Leica M to Sony NEX E-mount adapter is then used. These are all handheld at f/1.7, High ISO NR = weak, long exposure NR = off, and center weighted metering. Here is the discontinued CV 35 Ultron on the NEX-5. The silver on silver looks great, we just need to convince adapter makers to make them in silver as well. The lens has a large focusing ring which is very easy to use. The 52.5mm equivalent focal length makes it an exceptional walk-around lens.

Sony NEX-5 Sensor Beats Canon 7d - DxOMark

Image
DxOMark tested the Sony NEX-5 and NEX-3 and found both to be more than capable. DxOMark found that the sensors showed excellent color depth, dynamic range, and low-light ISO performance. The NEX-5 topped the Canon EOS 7d dslr (by a slight margin), Olympus PEN E-P2, Panasonic Lumix GH1, and the Sony Alpha 450. Here is DxOMark's disclaimer: Disclaimer: This dxomark review evaluates only the selected camera’s RAW sensor performance metrics (i.e., Color Depth, Dynamic Range, and Low-Light ISO), and should not be construed as a review of the camera’s overall performance, as it does not address such other important criteria as image signal processing, mechanical robustness, ease of use, flexibility, optics, value for money, etc. While RAW sensor performance is critically important, it is not the only factor that should be taken into consideration when choosing a digital camera. Change ISO Settings on the Nex 5 Quickly

Here's a video showing the much maligned Sony Nex user interface. It shows us how quickly one can change ISO settings and adjust Exposure Compensation very quickly.
