Zeiss babyPrimes for Sony NEX E-mount

Image
Zeiss babyPrimes for Sony NEX E-mount

KelvinKamera in collaboration with Carl Zeiss AG will be producing Zeiss babyPrime lenses. babyPrimes are Zeiss ZF.2 lenses rehoused with a cinematographer in mind: clickless aperture ring for smooth iris transitions, common 95mm filter ring for use with many accessories. babyPrimes will be made in the native Sony E-mount in a "real interesting price range". This will be a nice alternative to Zeiss CP.2 Compact Prime Lenses - perfect for the new NEX-FS100 Handycam, NEX-VG10 Camcorder, and the rest of the NEX family.

Zeiss ZF.2 lenses are Zeiss lenses designed for Nikon cameras with focal lengths ranging from 18mm to 100mm. ZF.2 lenses can be used on the NEX E-mount with a Nikon to E-mount lens adapter.

Zeiss Compact Prime Lenses for NEX E-mount Announced

Image
Carl Zeiss 85/2.1 Compact Prime on Sony NEX-VG10 by farwesttexasphotog from CP+
Carl Zeiss Cinematography officially announced that the Compact Prime CP.2 lenses will be available in the Sony NEX E-mount. CP.2 lenses have interchangeable mounts and with the short register distance of the NEX an adapter or mount was easily made. The NEX and the CP.2 combination was first shown in Japan at the CP Plus convention. This is great news for videographers who use the NEX-VG10 and the new NEX-FS100.

Samyang Sony NEX E-mount Lenses Coming

Image
Samyang 8mm Fisheye Lens Designed for the NEX-VG10

Samyang announced that they will start making Sony NEX E-mount lenses. The first lens that Samyang adapted to the E-mount is the 8mm Fisheye Lens with a maximum aperture of 3.5. The Samyang 8mm f/3.5 FISH-EYE CS VG10 lens is optimized for videography with smooth aperture transitions and minimized vignetting.
The 8mm Fisheye converts to an equivalent 14.4mm field of view on the Sony NEX-VG10 Camcorder.
Samyang is the 5th 3rd party lens manufacturer for the Sony NEX E-mount. We can't wait for more value minded lenses with excellent optical quality from Samyang for the Sony NEX system.

Upcoming Sony NEX E-mount Lenses

Image
Can anyone translate this?
Here is the current schedule for upcoming E-mount lenses for the Sony NEX system from Sony Japan. It looks like we can expect the Sony 30mm (45mm FOV), 50mm (75mm FOV), and 55-200mm (82.5 - 300mm FOV) zoom lenses this year.

The one lens most people are waiting for will also be available soon, the Carl Zeiss 24mm lens is expected to be released this year. The CZ 24mm autofocus NEX lens will provide an equivalent field of view of 36mm, wide angle normal, on the APS-C sensor.

Three more lenses will be available in 2012. Hopefully someone can translate the image above so we can have more information on what they are.

All these E-mount lenses will be autofocus lenses.

Sony CP Plus Booth Video

Image
Thanks to SpacePigTV and Akihabara News, we have a video of what the Sony CP Plus booth looks like. This is where all the good news for the Sony NEX is coming from.

Sony announced that four manufacturers will make E-mount lenses:
Carl Zeiss AG (we already knew that)As an independent lens provider, Carl Zeiss welcomes the disclosure of the “E-mount” specifications by Sony. It helps manufacturer’s product development, benefits customers and therefore assists in establishing “E-mount” as a new, healthy and strong system on the market. Cosina Co, Ltd... is excited by the potential of Sony’s “E-mount” which enables to a large-size image sensor to be incorporated in a compact, interchangeable lens camera. We have high expectations for the “E-mount” with its aims to create a new photography culture, and express its assent to Sony’s decision to provide information related to “E-mount”. Sigma Corporation... fully supports Sony’s decision to disclose basic “E-mount” specifications. We believe this…

Sony NEX Sigma Optical Stabilizer Test

Image
We posted about the Bigma on the NEX-VG10 before but this video shows how well the OS (Optical Stabilizer) function of the Sigma 50-500mm lens works.

The test by YoshiroOh uses a Sony NEX-VG10 camcorder, a LA-EA1 Sony Alpha lens adapter, and the Bigma. The lens is tapped by a finger to introduce vibration and the OS is at three different settings, OFF, 1, and 2 Vertical.

The Optical Stabilizer of the Bigma seems to work fine. This video is before the new NEX-VG10 Firmware 02 update so it could have improved since then.

If you have a NEX-3 or NEX-5 and the Bigma, we'd like to see if the results are the same.

NEX Body and Rear Lens Cap Available

Image
The unicorns have arrived at the Sony Style store. The Sony NEX Body Cap, part number ALC-B1EM, and the Rear Lens Cap, part number ALC-R1EM, are now available at Sony Style. These are necessary if you are using lens adapters since those do not come with any caps.

Hopefully the Sony NEX-3, NEX-5, and NEX-VG10 kits will have both caps included in the box.

Of course you can also search on eBay for third party Sony NEX E-mount caps.

Sony NEX-VG10 Sigma 50-500mm Bigma Video

Image
Here is some footage that Steve N shot with his NEX-VG10 and the Sigma 50-500mm ultra zoom lens aka Bigma. The Bigma used is a Nikon mount so it does have an aperture ring but focusing is all done manually. Steve points out:
...Sony hasn't equipped the VG10 with focus confirmation or focus assist: there is no peaking or image enlargement which would help immensely when working with MF lenses...perhaps a firmware update can address this!
Sony stated at Photokina that they will be working with third party lens makers so we can expect focus confirmation, and aperture control on adapted lenses.

Here are Steve N's pictures of his Sony NEX-VG10, a Nikon F mount to Sony E-mount lens adapter, and a Sigma 50-500mm f/4.5-6.3 APO Ultra Telephoto, aka the Bigma. This would give an equivalent of 90mm to 900mm zoom lens on the NEX-VG10 with it's 1.8x crop factor. We'll post videos soon...

Check out Steve N's work!

Sony NEX American Photo Editors Choice Award Winner

Image
The NEX cameras have won an American Photo Editor's Choice Award.

from popphoto.com:
Of the hundreds of products released this year, these are the ones that matter most, the true innovations in the field. By Jonathan Barkey Posted October 12, 2010
The winners of this year's Editor's Choice Awards had to meet the highest standard ever: For American Photo's editorial team to choose them, they had to qualify as "game-changing"—to have transformed, or have the potential to transform, the very way photographers work. To be fair to all the other great photo products that came to market this year, that's a tough standard to meet in a field in which progress is largely incremental. But the rigor we brought to bear on the task challenged our preconceptions and helped us transcend our usual category-based thinking.

Many of our winners are exemplars of larger trends in the industry. Sony’s NEX system joins the burgeoning ILC (Interchang…

Sony NEX and Steadicam Merlin

Image
NEX-VG10 on Steadicam Merlin by cheesuwencheesuwen writes:
The arrival of the NEX10 with its weight is just perfect for the Merlin. With a LitePanels MicroPro on it, it weighs just slightly above 1.3kg. A weight I can sustain without the help of the Steadicam Arm and Vest.

Here are a couple of videos from eiji1783 using the Sony NEX-5 with the Tiffen Steadicam Merlin. It's amazing how steady the videos look while he's chasing kids at play.

NEX-VG10 vs Canon 5D mkII vs Panasonic GH1

Image
Let's see how the Sony NEX-VG10 Handycam does against the Canon 5d Mark II and the Panasonic GH1 in this quick comparison.

Sony NEX-VG10 Shoots 1080p 30fps Not Interlaced

This hands on video of the Sony NEX-VG10 is good except for the errors. The VG10 does not shoot interlaced, rather it shoots at 1080p at 30 fps. The data is then distributed in AVCHD 1080i 60fps. Open up the video in any video editor and you will see the 1080p 30fps file. The VG10 uses Progressive Segmented Frames to convert the 1080p file to a more consumer friend 1080i.

from wikipedia, Progressive segmented Frame:
Progressive segmented Frame (PsF, sF, SF) is a scheme designed to acquire, store, modify, and distribute progressive-scan video using interlaced equipment and media.

With PsF, a progressive frame is divided into two segments, with the odd lines in one segment and the even lines in the other segment. Technically, the segments are equivalent to interlaced fields, but unlike native interlaced video, there is no motion between the two fields that make up the video frame: both fields represent the same instant in time. This technique allows for a progressive picture to be proc…
